What is a passport size photo, and why does it matter?

A passport size photo is a small, standardised photograph used for official documents — passports, visas, Aadhaar and PAN cards, driving licences, government exam admit cards, and job applications. Every country and department sets its own rules for the exact size, the background colour, how much of the frame the face should fill, and the print quality. India typically asks for 3.5 × 4.5 cm, the United States asks for 2 × 2 inches, and most of Europe uses 35 × 45 mm — get the size wrong and an application can be rejected outright.

This tool handles that entire process for you: pick a country size, crop your photo to match it, swap in a compliant background colour, and lay multiple copies out on a single sheet so you can print and cut them at home instead of paying a studio.

How to use this tool

  1. Upload your photo(s). Add multiple photo people in one go — select several files at once or drag and drop them onto the upload area, and each face fills its own box automatically.
  2. Crop to the right size. Choose a country preset or a custom size, then drag, zoom and rotate until the face is centred. Brightness, contrast and saturation sliders update the preview live as you drag them.
  3. Remove or change the background. Run AI background removal (Normal for speed, HD for the cleanest edges) and pick any background colour — white is standard for most Indian documents.
  4. Print a ready-to-cut sheet. Choose a paper size and orientation — a 4×6" sheet fits about 6 photos in portrait and roughly 8 in landscape — set how many copies each person needs, optionally add a thin border around each photo, and download a high-resolution JPG.

Tips for a photo that won't get rejected

Use a photo taken in even, natural light with no shadows across the face. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression, keep the head filling about 70–80% of the frame, and remove glasses if they cause glare. When you print, use actual-size (100%) printing rather than "fit to page" — scaling the page changes the physical photo size and can cause a rejection even if the on-screen crop was correct.
